When a direct lightning strike hits a building or tree, it generates a strong electromagnetic field nearby. This can cause abnormal voltages (lightning surges) to occur in nearby communication lines, power lines, etc. through electromagnetic induction. Lightning surges that enter a building through communication or power lines in this way are called induced lightning surges.
